Good Flower Guide

Get the Most From Your Flowers

Flowers in The Naked Florist arrangements are home-grown, spray free and seasonal. They are picked fresh for you and in most cases will last up to seven days...  possibly even longer if you care for them properly.

Flowers are fleeting! We value them for their beauty, colour, fragrance and the joy they bring.  So to honour their beauty, and to get maximum life and enjoyment out of your flowers, follow these simple instructions:

Choose a clean vase

Always place flowers in a clean vase, jar or jug.  Remember you can use any water-tight container to display your flowers, just make sure it isn’t dirty as bacteria can quickly build up.   Avoid metallic vessels if you can however.  If your arrangement is tied, grab the whole bunch and remove from the vessel the first few times you refresh the water.

Use clean water

Using tepid water (approximately 40 degrees, or just warmer than from the tap) is a good way to rehydrate flowers, allowing a steady water flow up the stems.   After 3-4 days give them a completely fresh refill, and tri the stems.

Look after them and they will last longer!

  • Remove foliage and flowers as they age, to reduce premature aging of the remaining flowers.
  • Remove leaves from stems that will be below the water line in water.  This reduces the amount of bacteria and fungi growth that can foul the water.
  • Use sharp scissors to re-cut all stems on a 45° angle, about 1cm from the bottom.  This helps allow maximum water intake up the stem to hydrate the flowers.
  • Position the vase in a suitable spot, out of direct sunlight and away from heat and fruit.
  • Replace water every 2-3 days.  Flowers drink a lot, especially if it is hot or humid!
  • Minimise proximity to other fruit and vegetables (as these give off ethylene gas which quickens the aging process).
  • Keep away from smoke, dust or excess heat (including gas heaters).

Specific Flower Care

Daffodils

Daffodils

Daffodils

Daffodils secrete a sap that most other flowers don't like.  When trimming the stems, leave them in a seperate vase for two hours before returning to the arrangement.

Dahlias

Daffodils

Daffodils

Dahlias are summer stunners with strong,  hollow stems make them stable, but thirsty.   Make sure you replenish the water daily and keep them out off direct sunlight.

Hydrangea

Daffodils

Hydrangea

When trimming the stems, cut a tad higher than normal and gently bash the stem ends with a rolling pin (crushing the fibres enables them to hydrate much easier).

Lilies

Sweet Peas

Hydrangea

If they have stamens, remove them immediately so that the pollen doesn't stain any

materials or clothing.

Note: MOST lilies I grow are pollen-less!

Sweet Peas

Keep these in a cool place and ensure the flowers aren't crowded in the vase.

If they overheat they will  deteriorate quickly.

Tulips

Sweet Peas

Sweet Peas

Tulips will continue to grow and open in the vase. They will turn to the light.  They prefer shallow water and continual movement (change the direction ion the vase) so the stems stay strong.
